RICH'S RANTS

Why in the world would the Dems want to pass campaign reform? It strikes me, they have engineered the ideal Democratic Campaign Reform Law already. They have figured out ways to accept bribes, er, campaign funds from the Riadi Family (Indonesia), Red China, and Loreal. They continue to rent out the Lincoln bedroom, give plush govt contracts to contributors even at the cost of natl security and abuse the power of the presidency to squash their political opponents. They hammer on the nations premiere computer company (notorious known for not participating in welfare to politicians) to demonstrate their power, while reuniting the monopolies of friendly old conglomerates who know how the game is played. And if that isn't enough, their candidate will be receiving govt money to extend their reign without conforming to any of the restrictions the public had in mind when they dipped into the public funds.

Still, they seem to favor "disclosure". (This means they can raise all the money they want, from whoever they want, as long as they make it known, ala Chairman John McCain.) Anyone who comes in front of McCain's committee would be well advised to contribute to his campaign coffers. This isn't reform. This is the status quo. John McCain won't have to change a thing. (They also want to prohibit all donations 60 days before an election, to assure that all contributions are recd early before the winner is known.)

Every govt agency has been corrupted as a result of the poor leadership. When IRS officials were caught scanning confidential income returns of neighbors and celebrities, they feigned innocence, claiming ignorance of the law, and were exonerated. (Congress used this same excuse when they got caught not providing Social Security benefits for their maids, nannies and other servants.) The BATF obtained military equipment and services fraudulently, and no one in govt raised an eye brow. A US Marshall shot a teenager in the back with a machine gun at Ruby Ridge, and the sniper who took out his mother went scot-free--but they prosecuted his/her dad/husband in an obvious case of entrapment.

This is a big country, and sh*t happens, but the real crime is, after they burned down, Mt Carmel, after they blow up an embassy, after they get caught reading confidential FIB files, and after Monica, nothing happens. The perps get away with it; and our once vigil Forth Estate, having already been kicked out of the West Wing, dare not say a word.

If Ronald Reagan were to have a miraculous recovery, and if he were to run for a 3rd term, do you think he'd campaign Vs the Evil Empire we have become, bombing embassies and aspirin factories. Starving whole populations of inefficient non-threatening communist countries and destroying the infrastructures of the capitals of Serbia and Iraq. Ruby Ridge could never have happened on Reagan's watch. Nor the Waco Massacre, but if they did, does anyone doubt the press would have been all over him like bees on honey? Would the press be silent if Echelon, which eavesdrops on virtually every electronic transmission in the world, had become known to exist under Reagan? Or, would they be insisting that the govt abide by the Bill of Rights, and stop violating any one's privacy without a valid warrant?

There is one more detail I'm curious about. Long time readers may remember a column on these pages about Hillary having 2 campaign funds, one to run for Senator of NY and another for President of the United States. At the time it seemed obvious that it was a way to allow her supporters to get around campaign limits, allowing them to donate the maximum to both bank accounts. Well, two weeks ago when I checked the same FEC web site, Hillary for Prez was no longer listed. What happened to the money? Did she spend it on her Senate race, abscond with it, or return it? (I'm sure the FEC doesn't care either way any more than the IRS cares if they turn stamps into cash refunds.) Anyone have a clue?

See that circle on your calendar around April 19th. That's supposed to remind you to go to the Davidian Memorial on that day. Hope to see you there.
